Jamie Blakey latest project is all retro, endless summer charm. A Yamba haven where surf nostalgia meets modern comfort.

Step into a sun-drenched dream of the 60s at Sundowner, the latest project from designer and friend of C+G, Jamie Blakey. Tucked in the heart of Yamba on NSW’s stunning east coast, this reimagined beachside boutique motel is all pastel hues, breezy balconies, and laid-back charm.

With checkerboard tiles underfoot, festoon lights overhead, and the smell of salt in the air, Sundowner is the kind of place that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. Each apartment is a carefully curated mix of vintage furniture, custom details, and luxe C+G linens in Marine Blue and Tobacco—a colour pairing that feels perfectly at home among the soft ocean tones and striking sunsets.

Just beyond Sundowner’s nostalgic walls, Yamba offers the kind of small-town charm that makes you want to throw your phone in a drawer and stay forever. Spend the morning surfing or strolling along Main Beach, grab lunch at one of the local cafés, or explore the headlands and rock pools.

Back at Sundowner, guests can unwind with a book on their private balcony, or join neighbours for a sunset spritz under the festoon lights in the communal courtyard. Whether you’re visiting for a romantic weekend, a laid-back solo escape or a friend-filled weekender, Sundowner offers the kind of thoughtful, relaxed experience that stays with you long after you’ve checked out.

We recently visited to soak in the retro magic and capture the way Sundowner makes every detail feel intentional, yet effortlessly cool. From lazy mornings in linen-clad beds to golden hour cocktails, it’s a stay that channels the best of the past—while feeling right at home in the present. While there, we also managed to grab Jamie for a quick chat, read on for the low down on this sunny new spot.

Tell us about your amazing Sundowner location in Yamba?

Yamba is our happy place, so we wanted the look and feel to replace that – a retro-inspired retreat on Australia’s stunning NSW east coast. It is where we bring the magic of a ‘60s beachside boutique motel into the present. Each apartment is a self-contained sanctuary, with sun-drenched balconies, checkerboard tiles and curated Mid-Century furniture that invites you to slow down.

You were inspired by Californian surf shacks of the 1960s – tell us more…

Sundowner fuses 60s surf culture with psychedelic mid-century style. This thoughtfully reimagined apartment block channels the easygoing spirit of vintage surf culture, with a soft pastel palette, breezy open spaces and nostalgic touches that feel effortlessly cool.

What do you love about Yamba?

It is stunning! And has a way for you to instantly feel relaxed. It is everything you want on a holiday (or for life in general if you’re local).

Of course you have all Carlotta + Gee bedding – what was your inspiration for the colours?

We love having fun with colour and especially in this location it was ideal. A bold palette of retro peach, mustard, seafoam blue, and sunset orange pairs perfectly with one-of-a-kind vintage furniture, creating a space that’s effortlessly cool and full of character.

What do you love most about the location?

It has a high street balcony to be able to soak up warm sunsets over the Clarence River with a sundowner aperitif, creating the perfect end to your day. Just steps from Yamba’s village, Main Beach, and the iconic Ocean Pool, Sundowner brings coastal living to life with its playful yet refined vibe.
